Research and Monitoring

River Watch Program

Since our inception Battenkill Conservancy has worked with various groups (Watershed Assessment Associates, Trout Unlimited, Hudson Basin River Watch, local college and high school science students) to monitor the water quality of the Battenkill. Our monitoring program measures and tracks the physical, chemical, and biological health of the river.  Our annual River Watch Program has nearly a decade of high quality water monitoring data and reports that can be used to track the long term health of the watershed.  The Program aims to:
  • Involve local landowners, farmers, businesses, students, and teachers
  • Educate through workshops, school involvement, and public activities
  • Monitor the stream velocity, flow, dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, microorganisms, and macroinvertebrates
  • Prepare a multi-year water quality report of the Battenkill

Eagle Watch

BkC instituted an annual Eagle Watch Outing in 1993 to monitor the population of eagles and other raptors present in the watershed. The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) have been making a comeback in this area since their reintroduction to New York in the 1970's. Both species are now occasionally seen along the river corridor.
