Battenkill Conservancy Presents Award-Winning
"Do-It-Yourself Water Quality Guide"
On October 4, 2012, the Battenkill Conservancy hosted a presentation of the award winning “Do-It-Yourself Water Quality Guide” by speaker Chris Navitsky of the Fund for Lake George at the Battenkill Country Club in Greenwich, New York. In conjunction with BkC’s annual membership meeting, Chris Navitsky who serves as the Lake George Waterkeeper presented the guide that won the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Award for its easy to read, informative and detailed land use practices that can directly improve an area’s water quality.
The guide, published earlier this year by The FUND for Lake George and the Lake George Waterkeeper has won high praise from numerous organizations and neighborhood groups. Its educational efforts bring solid information to families, individuals and property owners about ways to improve their local water quality through fun and easy to implement techniques including planting of native species, building a rain garden and creating stream buffers. Now with the support of Parks & Trails New York, Battenkill Conservancy has distributed copies of the Guide to the Greenwich, Easton, Salem & Cambridge, NY & Arlington & Dorset, Vermont local libraries for the public to enjoy. Copies can also be ordered directly through Battenkill Conservancy or by visiting www.fundforlakegeorge.org
Chris Navitsky is one of nearly 200 Waterkeepers globally who under the guidance of the umbrella organization, The Waterkeeper Alliance, promotes the compliance of existing laws to protect the natural resources for the common good of the community. Chris uses his extensive experience as a licensed professional engineer and over 16 years of consulting experience to implement a “bottoms up” approach to serve as spokesperson and determine the best approach for protection. Decision making is based on scientific data, collected research, engineering principles and the application of existing regulations while interacting with local constituencies and volunteer groups to help address various concerns.
The presentation took place at the Battenkill Country Club which features over 700 feet of pristine Battenkill river frontage and attracted roughly 20 community residents and supporters of the Battenkill. This program was made possible in part by support received from Parks & Trails New York.
